Attached below you will find a generic Functional Resume with a 1-inch margin, opposed to a normal Chronological Resume. I post this template with a caveat...I don't like Functional Resumes for those people with a nice, long work history...stick with the Chronological Resume. As a Manager, I find reviewing Functional Resumes distracting, especially when you have to review another 50 resumes.
The main purpose of a Functional Resume is to showcase your abilities and achievements. As well as define yourself, not by work history, but by your abilities. For a person with a long work history and years of experience, I do not see a benefit over a Chronological Resume since you are achieving the same thing but in a much easier to read format.
That said, the Functional Resume can be successfully used by people under specific circumstances for specific points in their career. This would include:
- Career changers
- Parent re-entering the workforce
- Newly minted college graduates
- Extended bouts of un-employment
- etc. etc.
At this point I would suggest you evaluate the current position of your career and complete a Chronological and a Functional Resume. Then ask someone else, spouse, friend, etc. to read both and provide feedback. Try to come to a logical conclusion that would work best for your current situation.
